Black Welcomes Budget for Multi-Language Signage

Councillor Orla Black has welcomed the inclusion of a clear budget line in this year’s rates estimates for the provision of multi-language signage where there is a demand.

Cllr Black said: “The SDLP has been saying that the best way to deal with demands for the use of Irish and, or Ulster Scots in road and street signage in the district is the provision of a clear budget which will enable demands to be met.

“This year sees the introduction of such a budget line in the rates estimates. The Council will know how much it has to spend to meet such demands each year and applications will be able to be processed as soon as possible.

“This is a far better way of dealing with the demand for multi-language signs rather than trying to scratch around to find the funds from some other agreed budget which is already insufficient.

“The SDLP has long championed for the right to use Irish along with English in public signage and my colleagues and I on the Council are pleased that we now have this provision and that those areas who wish to apply for bi lingual signage can now be accommodated.

“I am proud of my Irish heritage and I believe that adding Irish or Ulster-Scots to road and street signs will reflect the rich cultural traditions of the Moyle area.”
